Mary, also known as Mari in the real world, is the protagonist of Dreaming Mary. Her goal is to explore the dream world.

Appearance[]

In the dream world, Mary has slightly wavy, pink shoulder length hair, large pink eyes, and fair skin. Her attire consists of a pink and white polka dotted knee-length dress, white stockings and black Mary Jane shoes. She can also be found holding a white lily, symbolizing her innocence.

Meanwhile, in the real world, Mari's look is very different. Mari has straight shoulder-length brown hair and rather sad looking brown eyes. She wears a large brown sweater with a white collar and a long skirt in a darker shade of brown.

Personality[]

Due to her cheerful girly look, it is speculated that Mary is a very happy girl, that loves to play games with her friends and everything pink and cute. This Mary is forever happy and doesn't have to deal with her father's implied sexual abuse or the loss of her innocence.

The real Mari however, is very quiet, solemn, and self-contained and appears to be a very depressed and lonely girl. Her mother passed away and she now lives alone with her abusive father. In order to avoid facing the sad truth, Mari would often sleep, escaping to her magical dream world.

Background[]

Mary, or Mari, lives alone in a large and isolated house with her father, as her mother passed away. She isn't allowed to leave the house, so instead of going to school, Mari has a private tutor that would come to the house. When bored, Mari plays with her tutor or maid, who quite possibly are her only friends, alongside her beloved uncle Gwendel, who visits every now and then and gives her gifts like books and dolls. As she wasn't allowed outside, Mari usually stays in the house or in the garden.^{^[1]}^{^[2]^[3]}

Mari's father is heavily implied to be abusing her, also sexually. In some of the endings, Mari is shown locked inside her own room, and isn't able to leave, before her father comes home.

According to the creators, Mary is around 11~13 years old.^{^[4]}
Mary's favorite color is pink.^{^[5]}
The radio in the beginning reveals various information about Mary:
- Mary inherited her special powers to create worlds in her dreams from her mother.
- Mary's favorite type of dreams are the long ones that take her deep away into different worlds.
- She doesn’t like short dreams because they start going dark and still and scary.
- Her iconic item is a white lily. White lilies are often symbols of innocence and purity.
  - The fact that two of the petals are missing before you start the game, could be an implication of her father's sexual abuse.
Mari likes being told stories and when it comes to books, she likes picture books better since she can’t read very well.^{^[6]}
Mary's appearance is based on an extremely cute girl one of the creators saw on tumblr.^{^[7]}
